Harrington wins second major in a row

08/10/2008 - Bloomfield Hills Township, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Padraig Harrington holed a gutsy 12-foot par save on the 72nd hole to win his second major in a row at the PGA Championship.

Harrington finished with his second four-under 66 in as many rounds to win his third major title at three-under 277.

The Irishman became the fourth player to win the British Open and PGA Championship in the same year, joining Walter Hagen, Nick Price and Tiger Woods in fine company.

Harrington is the first European to win the Wanamaker Trophy since Tommy Armour in 1930.

Sergio Garcia's bid for a first major title once again ended in heartbreak. He held the lead on the back nine, but a bogey at the last gave him a round of two-under 68 and a share of second place with third-round leader Ben Curtis, who shot a one-over 71. The pair came in at one-under 279.

Play on the back nine was sensational as Harrington, Garcia and Curtis battled for the season's final major.

It came down to the 18th with Harrington, who defeated Garcia in a playoff to win last year's British Open, one ahead of Garcia and two clear of Curtis.

Harrington, who made a seven-foot birdie putt at the 17th to walk to 18 with a one-shot lead, drove into a bunker and hit a terrible layup into the rough at the difficult closing hole at Oakland Hills.

Garcia, one back, drove into the rough and hit his second into a greenside bunker. Harrington, easily becoming one of the toughest closers in golf, knocked a seven-iron to 12 feet.

Garcia blasted out to 10 feet and if Harrington missed his par putt, Garcia would need that 10-footer to force a playoff.

Harrington never gave him a chance.

He snaked in the par putt, but did not officially win until Curtis' approach at 18 did not go in for eagle.

Curtis' ball stayed above ground and Harrington walked off with his third major in the last six contested.

Camilo Villegas posted a two-under 68 and tied for fourth with Henrik Stenson, who managed a two-over 72 on Sunday, at plus-one.

Phil Mickelson, the 2005 PGA Champion, threatened early in the final round, but fell off the pace. He finished with an even-par 70 and tied for seventh at plus-four.
